Ian Francis LDS 102 Islam Fact and Fiction 3-18-2009 Benazir Bhutto There is much of the west’s view of Islam that is clouded by ignorance and unwarranted fear. The media feeds us stories of suicide bombers being promised eternity in heaven and children being raised as killers. It seems that every day we are faced with this stereotype. However as time separates us from the tragedy of September eleventh and the irrational xenophobia of the west quiets, these misconceptions have been one by one laid to rest. While very few people in the west are truly literate in the true nature of Islam their understanding has grown as well as their tolerance. One fallacy in the west’s view of Islam that has yet to be truly clarified is the view of women in Islam. Too often do we hear of the poor Muslim girl forced into an unwanted marriage, with nothing to look forward to but a live of servitude. The images that the media feed us of Muslim women are all of munaqqabāt. To the liberal eyes of a westerner it is easy to view the niqāb as extreme. What isn’t understood by many is that this dress is quite often not compulsory. In fact it is not required by the Quran, it merely mentions that women were veiled. This only scratches the surface of the myths that are commonly believed as fact in regards to Muslim women. There is one woman however who individually stands in the spotlight of the world in stark contradiction to these lies. Benazir Bhutto was the first modern female leader of an Islamic nation. As both a leader of a state and afterwards as a political force in the world she spent much of her time combating all the mistaken beliefs held about her religion. However as a woman she was also uniquely qualified to combat misconceptions of the view of women in Islam. Her life was a remarkable one, even from the start.
