1 Mr. Calvey WRT 102-65 6 March 2009 George Saunders Blurs the Lines Between Gay and Straight George Saunders is morally outraged. In his article, My Amendment he brings the troubling trend of “same-ish sex” marriage to his reader’s attention. He argues that these unions should be viewed and treated just like gay marriages. This is because these marriages imply a subconscious affinity for the same sex. An effeminate mane who marries a masculine woman is obviously trying to satisfy his unconscious desire to be with another man. The same applies to that masculine woman. By marrying that effeminate man she is expressing her unconscious desire to be with another woman. This is a moral outrage according to Saunders, at least that’s what he wants us to think. In actuality My Amendment is a satirical attack on the social conservatives and their rationalizations for banning gay marriage. George Saunders successfully tries to highlight the problems with the social conservatives’ arguments to ban gay marriage through artful use of tone and presentation of ideas. Saunders’ use of tone in the satirical piece My Amendment lays the groundwork for his criticism of social conservatives. He uses a speech like tone to drive home his point character’s point, the banning of “same-ish sex marriages.” What this tone actually does is make Saunders sound didactic. The tone adopted isn’t quite one of a preacher speaking to his congregation nor is it of two friends discussing a topic, but somewhere in the middle. This is perfect for Saunders’ purpose. This allows him to come across as a morally superior busy-body, and that is exactly what he wants. This allows the reader to completely dismiss his character as a ridiculous bigot.
