4. Find and read the article, “Microbiologists Explore Life’s Rich Hidden Kingdoms,” by R.F. Service ( Science , 275 , 1740-1742, 1997) and answer the following questions: a) What is the key point of the article? Applications of molecular biological techniques have revealed a staggering wealth of diversity within microbial communities. This finding is causing fundamental shifts in the way microbial ecologists study and understand micro-organisms. b) What is 16S sequence analysis and how is it used to obtain data that supports the key finding reported in the article? Ans: The 16S gene code for the 16S subunit of the ribosome, the macromolecular machine that plays a central role in the synthesis of proteins in living cells. The 16S DNA sequences of closely related organisms are more similar than the sequences of distantly related ones. Hence, comparisions of 16S sequences extracted from different organisms can be used to establish evolutionary relationships. c)
