Bio 1A Lab Lecture Outline # 10 Vertebrate Anatomy (Rat) November 10 th , 2008 I. Lab Exam 2. A. During your 3 hour lab period during the week on December 2-5. B. Monday November 24 th : 5-6:30 Review C. Exam will include Bioinformatics, Inver I & II, Rat and Repro labs (not Chordate Diversity lab). II. Overview of Chordata A. Phylum Chordata: Amphioxus image i) pharyngeal gill slits, notochord, single hollow dorsal nerve cord, post-anal tail ii) subphylums: vertebrata/craniata: distinct head with special sense feature, active predation III. Excretory and osmoregulation system A. Osmoregulation – balancing solute concentrations, total and specific i) osmoconformers vs. osmoregulators – ii) freshwater vs. marine vs. land B. Excretion – elimination of nitrogenous waste i) NH3 vs. urea vs. uric acid fig. 44.8 C. Protonephridia – mostly osmoregulation D. Metanephridia – opening E. Malpighian tubules – uric acid into feces F. Kidney – cortex vs medulla rat presentation IV. Circulatory and respiratory system
