May 10, 2007 Biology 130 Overview of Immune System Two pathways o Antibody mediated Immue respones with B cells Epitope o Cell mediated Cytotoxic T cells T Helper cells connect the two pathways. They need an antigen-presenting cell APC which has MHC II complex (macrophage, dendritic cells, phagocytoic cells) All other somatic cells have MHC I complexes which when presenting antigens are only recognized by cytotoxic T cells Antibody mediated - humoral o Extracellular targets o Helper T cells react with MHC II to create antibodies o Release 30,000 antibodies per minute o Antibodies form better and better fit into the antigen o Produce memory cells and clone memory cells Cell mediated o Intracellular targets, cancer cells o MHC I binds cytotoxic T cell o APC with MHC II activates T helper cells Production of memory cells results in active immunization Make 5 different immunogloublins – don’t have to remember which work where Passive immunization – give antibodies because don’t have memory cells
