Alkitaab fii Ta’allum al-‘Arabiyya (with DVDs): A Textbook for Beginning Arabic. Part One, Second Edition (2004) (Georgetown University Press/Washington D.C.) (Optional) Wehr, Hans, and J. Milton Cowan . A Dictionary of Modern Arabic. (Cornell University. Ithaca, N.Y.) Course Description: In this class students learn to read, write, understand, and correctly pronounce all the Arabic letters. They are exposed to, and end up able to form, simple sentences and grammatical structures. The target language is Modern Standard Arabic, with some exposure to Egyptian colloquial. Cultural aspects of the region will be covered within the context of the language. During this quarter the class will have two midterms (one of which is oral) and two quizzes . Homework submitted on time is given a full grade. Late homework submitted no later than the Friday of the same week will receive 50% of the grade. After Friday, homework receives a zero. (If student wants detailed feedback on homework, they are to draw a star next to their name on the assignment.) Missed midterms and quizzes will receive a zero grade unless the student has an acceptable reason for missing. Acceptability of the reason is up to the discretion of the instructor.
