417 CRISPR Assignment
Q1 a)
Application of CRISPR gene editing in treatment of a genetic disease.
CRISPR-Cas9 is a tool which lets us edit any genetic mutation at will, allowing us to cure the
disease it causes. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes severe respiratory problems,
and by using the CRISPR technology we could be able edit the mutations that cause Cystic
Fibrosis by editing the mutations that are located in a gene called
CFTR.
The CRISPR technology can also be used in screening, by modifying thousands of genes to
assess their function in a single experiment. Any essential genes that are modified could lead to
development of a therapeutic drug.
Q1 b)
CRISPR screening uses this technology to enable thousands of genes to be modified and
their functions be assessed in a single experiment. The results obtained from the screen can
help identify what essential genes are required for the invading virus to infect and replicate.
