Michael Patino 01115539 Chem 1122-Trupta Experiment 7- Discovering the Gas Laws Objective / Aim of the lab- The objective of this lab is to introduce the theoretical relationships between pressure, volume, quantity, and temperature of a gas. Furthermore, this lab is designed to let us reproduce gas law experiments of Robert Boyle, Amadeo Avogadro, and Jacques Charles. The conceptual meaning behind the lab enabled a greater understanding allowing us to make this information more applicable and reasonable. Introduction/background information- During inhalation in humans, the external pressure (P atm ) is greater than the pressure in your lungs and consequentially the atmosphere “pushes” air into your lungs. The reverse process happens when you exhale. P atm is defined as the force per unit area applied against a surface by the weight of air on top of that surface at any known point in the Earth’s atmosphere. Gasses have unique characteristics that allow them to be labeled different from solids and liquids. Some of these properties include having a low density, low viscosity, but yet high miscibility. High miscibility leads them to be solutions in nature. Gasses flow freely, are compressible, and diffuse through space. Pressure (P) is one of the four key properties of gasses. Gas particles are in constant, random, straight-line motion. They exert a measurable pressure. Volume (V) is the next key property of gasses. Because gasses have indefinite shape, they fill the container that they are
