R u n n i n g h e a d : O T H E L L O P a g e | 3ThesisThe story of William Shakespeare’s Othello is one of love, tragedy, lies, greed, anddeception. This essay will discuss the points of the play that make it a tragedy according toAristotle, as well as why Othello is considered a tragic hero. Othello was a “black African ofroyal blood and a soldier of great experience” which fulfills the qualifications of him being whatthey called “alien, not a venetian citizen to be a commander-in-chief. He was highly regarded bythe people and senators (Perrines, 2018). Jealousy can either be a disposition within oneself, being more prone to be jealous of others, or it can be attributed to having someone put thoughtsinto your head or provide deceitful information. This was such the case in the play. Drama is much like poetry, in fact is it poetry with one particular characteristic, it is written tobe performed by actors on a stage. This play defines the characteristics of a tragedy set byAristotle. Shakespeare was not looking into the psychological aspect of Othello, or how pronehe was to jealousy. He was simply making the play dramatic for the audience. Othello is a hero, aman of great power, intelligence who demands and receives respect. Throughout the play thereis a sense of man with great control, self-worth, and religious ties. However, he seems to losehimself in a raging fit of jealousy against his wife, Desdemona. All started by Lago who wantedrevenge on Othello for overlooking him as lieutenant and choosing another man. Lago, succeeded in his quest by making Othello believe his wife was committing adultery and ends upkilling her.
