A FREE Web site accompanies the book: Materials Astronomy and the Universe Chapter One To understand the universe, astronomers use the laws of physics to construct testable theories and models • Scientific Method – based on observation, logic, and skepticism • Hypothesis – a collection of ideas (guesses?) concocted to explain a phenomenon • Model – sophisticated set of hypotheses, usually mixing tested and untested ideas • Theory – a succinctly stated description of a model…self consistent, compact and easily testable • Laws of Physics – theories that accurately describe the workings of physical reality, have stood the test of time and been shown to have great and general validity Section1.2: Celestial Motions Basic Concepts: • Angles: We measure the separation of things in the sky using angles, not distances, for obvious reasons.
