Chapter 7 The solar system has two broad categories of planets: Earthlike and Jupiterlike We can understand the most important similarities and differences among the planets by comparing their orbits, masses, and diameters Eccentricity – the elongation of an ellipse (circles therefore would be zero) terrestrial planets – high-density worlds with solid surfaces. Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars Jovian planets – low-density planets composed primarily of hydrogen and helium. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune biggest difference between terrestrial & Jovian is the diameter. Jovian are more massive, but on average terrestrial planets are denser. The terrestrial planets are made of rocky materials and have dense iron cores, which gives these planets high average densities. Jovian planets are composed primarily of light elements such as hydrogen and helium, which gives these planets low average densities.
