Contemporary Drama Harold Pinter’s style is connected with absurdist experiments. His dialogue is acerbic, repetitive, and sometimes apparently aimless. Groups such as Richard Schechner’s Performance group created ENVIRONMENTAL THEATER which combined a radical political message with theatrical experimentation Antonin Artaud created THEATER OF CRUELTY o Insisted on removing the comforting distance between actors & audience o Designed theatre to be a total experience – a sensational spectacle that did not depend on coherent plot or development but rather emphasized movement, gesture, music, sound, light, and other nonverbal elements o Collected his work in The Theatre and Its Double o He compared the theatre artist he envision to a victim “burnt at the stake, signaling through the flames” Richard Schechner’s most famous production was Dionysus in 69 o Part of the point was to inspire the audience so much they take to the stage o Play was spontaneous & partly improvised rather than a text meant to
