Lecture 6: Details of covalent bonds and molecular shapes Demonstration: a dye dissolved in hexane does not mix with water, while a dye dissolved in acetone does, because acetone is much more polar Further exploration of multiple bonds They contribute four or six electrons to the outer shells of the atoms in the bond, and two or three electrons to each atom towards neutralizing the nuclear charge Sometimes there is a choice of which pair of atoms gets the multiple bond and which gets a single bond, resulting in more than one “correct” structure If the structures are identical, the molecule is best described as an average of the two (resonance structures) If the structures are not identical, the molecule is a weighted average according to the stability of the structures (see below) Single and multiple bonds are a representation of molecular orbitals , formed from combinations of atomic orbitals, and accommodate electrons in molecules, two at a time.
