Exam 3 Review Sheet Equilibria covered: acid-base, solubility product constants, and redox reactions Write balanced equations for all three equilibria, and write equilibrium constant expressions based on activities of species in the reaction. Activities can be concentrations or partial pressures. Activities of solids and of pure liquids are unity. Know the definititions of Ka, pKa, [H+], and pH. Be able to interconvert these easily with a calculator. (Calculators will be allowed on the test.) Ka = [H+][B-] / [HB] and p means negative log. [H+][OH-] = 10 -14 For acids that can lose more than one proton, each proton loss has a separate Ka. Strengths of acids are defined by strengths of the bonds to H, and by electron withdrawing or donating groups near the bonds. Know pKa of broad families of acids. Know which acids are so strong that they are completely dissociated. Know how to simplify calculations of weak and moderate acids.

Ions that do not appear in the equilibrium constant do not affect the equilibrium. Solubility product constants are defined by the strengths and types of bonds in the solids. Know the Nernst equation, and remember that the sign is different from the G equation. E = E- RT/n F ln Q and E = 0 at equilibrium. Know how half reactions are combined to make balanced equations for real reactions. Become familiar with the table of redox couples, and understand which reactions are favored, and which types of species typically act as the oxidizing agents and which are usually reducing agents.
