Dweck 1 Abraham Dweck Professor Swanson EN102/ RR2 16 February 2009 The Fare of Welfare: Fair or Unfair? With the economic burden hitting everyone in the nation, the question of welfare and the payment of others’ irresponsibility has caused great debate. Giving money to those in need of it is a great thing, but then again isn’t that what charity is for? How welfare was created and the burden it puts on a society can be constituted as unconstitutional. If someone wants to be a savior and donate plenty of money then congratulations, but this program is a flawed government’s way of trying to reduce poverty while actually increasing it. In America the scene of a woman paying for her groceries in food stamps is not a shocking one. People look at society and government as what is owed to them, rather than what they can do for society. It’s like one of President Obama’s economic advisors Phil Gramm said “America has become a nation of whiners” (Gramm). So in America we should not be surprised that welfare was created, but does that make it right? No! Welfare today is as irresponsible as it was fifty years ago. It’s like Benjamin Franklin
