Abraham Dweck 12/2/07 Prof. Chris Tomaino THTR105 Playwright Research Paper – Tennessee Williams Tennessee Williams was a famous American playwright. Thomas Lanier Williams III was born on March 26, 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi, in the home of his maternal grandfather, the local Episcopal rector. When he was five he was diagnosed with a paralytic disease that caused his legs to be paralyzed for nearly two years. His mother, who saw that he would be limited, gave him a typewriter at the age of 13, and encouraged him to use his imagination. His father, Cornelius, was a traveling salesman, who became aggressively abusive with his children as he grew older. In the 1930’s he attended the University of Missouri- Columbia, where his fraternity Alpha Tau Imega gave him the name Tennessee, for his rich southern twang. In 1939, he moved to the French Quarter in New Orleans, and worked for the WPA (Works Progress Administration). Only a few years later did he start writing A Street Car Named Desire, he completed it in Key West, Florida where he moved in the early 40’s. The biggest influence in his life was his sister Rose, who had a slim body and a sad life. Rose was diagnosed with Schizophrenia when she was younger. Because of this, she was institutionalized and spent most of her adult life in mental hospitals. During the late 1950’s Williams got terrible reviews and many disliked him for the way he showed himself and his homosexuality which he showed in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.
