Assignment 4 G.E. Moore : Moore’s Proof In Moore’s essay he begins his argument against skepticism by stating how he is able to give various rigorous proofs for the existence of external objects. To illustrate his point he gives an example regarding the existence of his two hands. He says that by holding up each of his hands and making a “certain gesture” with each, he is able to prove their existence. Next he tells his reader what conditions must be met for a proof to be true. First of all, the premise brought fourth as evidence of the conclusion must be different from the conclusion it was adduced to prove. Second, one must know their premise to be true, not merely believe it so. Finally, the conclusion must follow from the premise. Though Moore admits that there might be more conditions necessary for his proof to be true, he does not know them. However, of all the conditions he does know, his proof satisfies them all. Moore then addresses the possibility of being asked to prove the existence of external objects that existed in the past. Once again he says that he is able to give various relevant proofs.
