Assignment 5 Reasons and Persons Chapter 10 – Derek Parfit Parfit begins this chapter by describing a science fiction story in which a man uses a teletransporter to get to and from Mars. The first version of the teletransporter machine destroys your brain and body at point A (earth) and creates a new replica with a body and brain identical to the original out of new matter at point B (Mars). Eventually a new teletransporter is developed that does not destroy the brain and body of the individual at point A but does damage their heart. A replica is created once again at point B but the original person at point A will die of cardiac failure within a few days. In an analysis of this story Parfit tells us that some readers of this story would come to believe that this teletransporter machine is not a mere mode of transportation because the original brain and body of the person are destroyed. The person that “arrives” at point B is an exact replica of the original person. If we choose to believe that the replica of the person is not
