Those Gems Andrew Meersman Novelist (Late afternoon. We are seated outside of a cafe in Sherman Oaks. He is dressed casually and is finishing off a cigarette. He takes a long last drag before we start and sets his sunglasses down on the table.) Miloine Illinois—the armpit of America… or the clavicle. Tomāto—Tomäto. Which time? I got here on January 4 th 97’ stayed for two years… went into a six-year marriage in the Midwest. Moved back here again in July 05’ and made my friends promise to physically restrain me from ever moving back to the Midwest again. Counting crows—“If you think you might move to California” (He sings) Naw I wanted to be a rock star—I wanted a chance to be a musician. I loved counting crows, they were always talking about LA. I moved away because I broke up with my girlfriend. I dunno, it was the stupidest decision I’ve ever made. I only intended to be there for three months and I ended up there for six years. Mainly for said marriage
