STA511 Lab #2 The first part of this lab (TASKS 1.1 - 1.5) should reinforce the different methods of inputting raw data into SAS (list, column, & formatted input), as well as giving you additional practice in using some of the basic procedures that SAS has to offer. Task 2 will introduce you to reading in an external text file. And, Task 3 will show you how to read an Excel spreadsheet into SAS using the Import Wizard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- DATA ABSTRACT: The data for this lab consist of data on the average public school teacher salary and spending on public schools per pupil in 1999 for each of the 50 states. These data were obtained from the website of the National Education Association ( www.nea.org ). TASK 1: Below is a listing of the average public school teacher salary (column 2) and spending on public schools per pupil (column 3) for thirteen southern states. For example, in the state of Virginia, the average teacher salary is $38,123 and the state spent $6,149 per pupil on public schools for the year 1999. STATE AVERAGE TEACHER SALARY SPENDING ON PUBLIC SCHOOLS PER PUPIL Virginia $38,123 6,149 West Virginia $35,008 8,488 North Carolina $39,149 5,724 South Carolina $36,081 6,113 Georgia $41,023 5,953 Florida $36,722 5,872 Kentucky $36,380 6,425 Tennessee $36,328 5,387 Alabama $36,689 4,946 Mississippi $31,857 4,605 Arkansas $33,386 5,540 Louisiana $33,109 5,701 Texas $37,567 6,092 Your first task (below) will be to create a SAS dataset using the data found in the table. FOR PRACTICE, YOU SHOULD ENTER YOUR RAW DATA EXACTLY THE WAY IT LOOKS IN THE TABLE. Think about if you would like a permanent or temporary SAS dataset and create the appropriate type. Your dataset should have three variables: STATE indicating the state, PAY indicating the average teacher pay, and SPEND indicating the amount spent per

pupil. Before proceeding give some thought to the different methods of inputting data that we have discussed in class ( LIST , COLUMN , and FORMATTED ). NOTE: To save time, you may just enter data for the first 5 states into your dataset.
