What is Data? Indeed the world is becoming quantitative . Large and rich datasets are collected every day for both level of government as well as corporate America. Data are not just numbers, but numbers that carry information about a specific situation. This valuable information would be used to take important decisions and/or actions and also to communicate this information to the public in the face of uncertainty and adversity. In general, by data we mean a collection of numerical values with a context and that has structure that we are willing to investigate . Introduction to statistics – p. 2/32

Where this Data Comes From? Examples : Government census conducted every 10 years to count the population. This information is also useful to forecast transportation networks, energy consumption, to determine population migration and immigration policies, etc. Hospital data collected for disease surveillance, to determine the extent of disease found in the community, to evaluate new preventive measures and new modes of health care delivery. For example, find extent of exposure to second hand smoking, alcohol and drug consumption in youth. Evaluation of environment safety policies and their impact, global warming policies. Where is this Data Comes From? Consumer expenditure surveys: consumers attitude toward auto manufacturing and auto dealership, toward religion, entertainments, cost of housing. various scientific and non-scientific opinion pools about public approval to president policy, baseball drug policy. Data are collected to be analyzed and turned into knowledge for a better understanding of the world around us . In data analysis context provides meanings. A natural question is what to do with this data and how to read anything from it. To answer this basic question, one needs to learn Statistics. Introduction to statistics – p. 4/32

What is Statistics? Statistics can grossly be defined as the art of interrogating and reading a dataset critically. Statistics is fundamentally about designing an experiment which would produce good data, collecting data, handling and analyzing this data to discover structures, patterns, and trends, interpreting the results of the analysis within its specific settings and boundaries, and drawing practical conclusion eventually. “Statistics is like grout - the word feels decidedly unpleasant in the mouth, but it describes something essential for holding a mosaic in place”.
