Civil war and reconstruction Slave masters wanted to expand west, free farmers (soilers) did not want to be in competition Compromise of 1850 California- free state New Mexico and Utah vote if free/slave Gave southerners fugitive slave law Fugitive slave law of 1850 Allowed slave holders or their agents to arrest fugitives without due process and without warrants Worst federal legislature for African Americans because it placed everyone under suspect Enforcement was placed in hands of U.S. commissioners and marshals. Abraham Lincoln (1860) Had no intention of freeing slaves Slavery could exist but not expand Don’t believe in social racial equality Pressured to emancipate W.E.B. Dubois The response of the enslaved people during the civil war was a general strike (stop working and make demands) Fled plantations and joined the union The union soldiers returned the slaves to the confederates because to them the war was never about slavery
