Unformatted text preview: PHY124 ELECTRIC FIELD PLOTTING Exp. 1 Abstract In this experiment we will plot a series of lines of equal potentials, deduce from these the electric field distributions, and calculate exact electric fields at several locations. The goal of the experiment is to develop an intuitive understanding for equipotential lines, electric field lines, and how to quantitatively calculate one of these from the other. 1 Knowledge and Understanding Goals You should have a hands-on knowledge of all the following items at the end of the lab period: The meaning of equipotential lines: whether or when they can cross one another, what are their units, what patterns of these lines indicate strong and weak regions of electric field. The meaning of electric field lines: whether or when they can cross one another, the units of electric field, how the patterns of these lines compare to equipotential lines, how they indicate the presence of positive or negative charge. The relationships between equipotential and electric field lines: how do their directions compare (and why is this so), how to deduce the pattern of one of these given the pattern of the other, how to calculate one set from another. Why all points inside a conductor are at the same potential. How to measure equipotential lines on a piece of carbon paper.
