Unformatted text preview: Quiz #1 • Monday • Bring paper (and pen/pencil) • Read the article on myucdavis, in the “quiz” folder Writing Assignment #1 Due October 13 • The Scientific Method – Observation – Hypothesis – Refined Hypothesis – Experiment – Interpretation of Results Writing Assignment 1 The Scientific Method • For this essay, you will follow the scientific method in a theoretical exercise, similar to the description of the mushroom and the squirrel in lecture 1. Writing Assignment 1 The Scientific Method Observation and Hypothesis • Make an observation (imaginary or real) and from that observation, form a hypothesis. Remember, this hypothesis must be testable, at least in theory. Writing Assignment 1 The Scientific Method Refined Hypothesis • Refine your hypothesis so that it will be possible to make useful interpretations from the results (this may include defining the species you are observing, the location, the time of year…anything that makes your hypothesis more definitive). Writing Assignment 1 The Scientific Method Experiment • Design an experiment to test your hypothesis. This can be as simple or elaborate and expensive as you would like. Be sure to include a control(s) for the experiment, and state how many times you will replicate your experiment and why that is necessary. Writing Assignment 1 The Scientific Method Interpretation of Results • How would you interpret your results? How would you know if your hypothesis is supported by the experiment? How would you know if your hypothesis is disproved by the experiment? What would you suggest for further study? Writing Assignment #1 • Grading will be based on the following: • Completeness – did you follow the assignment and answer all the questions? • Comprehension – is it clear to the reader that you understand the scientific method? • Grammar and writing – are there significant grammar or writing problems? • Format: 2-3 pages, double spaced, 12 point font. Include references if you use them (see handout on how to cite). Writing Assignment #1 Getting help from your TAs: • Please contact either TA for help if you’d like it. You can come to office hours, make an appointment, or e-mail us. We’re here to help you improve your writing....
