Chem 2545 T.A.: Ryan Weyers Post Lab #4 part 2 Partner: Sharyn Miller Dominic Liss Lab: Tues/Thurs 12:30-4:50 Title: The Separation of an Organic Acid, Organic Base, and Neutral Compound Using Liquid-Liquid Extraction Objectives: To extract and separate three different compounds using liquid-liquid extraction. Observations: One thing in particular that we noticed in this lab was the different colors and color changes of the three substances. When first put in together, and dissolved with the ether, there was a clear liquid layer and an orange liquid layer. When the Benzoic acid was extracted out it created a white, almost fluffy, substance; when the m-nitroaline was extracted it created a yellow solid; and when the azobenzene was extracted it was an orange solid. Weight of watch glass: 44.563 grams With benzoic acid: 44.954 grams With m-nitroaniline: 44.675 grams Weight of 50 mL beaker: 29.362 grams With azobenzene: 29.382 grams Melting point of benzoic acid: 122.7°C Melting point of m-nitroaniline: 106.3°C
