Red Queen hypothesis - Parasites evolve betterways to exploit host -Host evolves defense against new parasite tricks 3. can cause differential reproduction/survival (i.e., natural selection) 4. Life cycle can be complex with very specific adaptations D. Parasites and Human Health 1. Malaria – 595-6, Web Animation on Mastering Biology -Protozoan that infects 300 million people and causes 2 million deaths per year 2. African Sleeping sickness, -Transmitted by Tsetse flies – cattle intermediate host , 3. Chaga’s disease -Also a protozoan, fatal if untreated
