Course Description: 4 hours of lecture plus 1 hour Student Instruction (SI) per week plus 1 hour lab arranged per week. This course includes the properties of real numbers, factoring, exponents and rad- icals, solving and graphing linear equations, polynomials and rational algebraic expressions and linear systems of equations. TAP is a comprehensive program designed to assist students develop skills necessary for college success and to achieve their expressed goal of transferring to a four-year college or university. Students are required to attend one hour per week for SI session. This session will be held in Rm 623 . Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of Math 20, the student will be able to: • identify an equation as linear, quadratic or rational and solve using an appropriate method, • perform factoring of polynomials, • construct the graph of a line. Text: Lial, Hornsby, McGinnis, Beginning Algebra , 10th edition. The bookstore now sells a 3-hole punched text which is equivalent to the hardcover text. Bring the textbook to every class meeting. MyMathLab: MyMathLab (MML) is required for this course. All homework will be completed using MyMathLab. The course ID is larios73726 . The website is http://coursecompass.com Calculators & Materials: A scientific (non-graphing) calculator will be required for selected topics. Sharing of calculators is prohibited for quizzes and exams. Cell phones are not allowed. All paper that is handed in must be 8.5” x 11” or 8” x 10.5”. Pencil is required for quizzes and exams. Colored pens or colored pencils are recommended for note taking. Graph paper will be needed for Ch. 3-4 & 9. A spiral notebook for completing homework. Math Lab: 1 hour per week is required. A minimum of 15 hours (900 minutes) are required for the semester. Hours will be recorded by scanning your ID card each time you enter and exit the Math Lab. Each exam there will be a check to see if you have completed the required hours. If you have not met the requirement at the time of the exam, you will lose 3 pts for each hour that you are missing.
