Homework- Week 1Jamie Maxon 1.Thyroid hormones exert their effects on cells in a manner similar to steroid hormones; describe the mechanism of action of thyroid hormones.-Thyroid hormones enter a cell making them intracellular, then it binds its receptor whichthen interacts with parts of the DNA.2.Why would an imbalance in thyroid hormones have such widespread effects on the body?-It takes the correct balance of the hormones produced within the thyroid for it to function properly. Working with other systems in the body, if the levels are not balanced then the side effects become apparent. 3.Why was goiter observed in Michael's case?-Through his physical exam but he also showed symptoms of thyroid imbalance. 4.Why would calcium homeostasis be impaired in response to removal of the thyroid gland?-As a result, from having a thyroidectomy, the parathyroid regulates your calcium levels and during surgery this can become damaged.
