Course Objectives This course is intended for senior undergraduate Engineering Science students pursuing the Systems Option, or those with interests in modern techniques of systems and automatic control. Unlike the classical approach to the subject, state space formulation and time domain techniques are used for analysis and design of single variable as well as multivariable systems throughout the course. State space approach is particularly well suited for numerical implementations, and therefore in the lab- oratory part of the course CAD will be stressed for implementing various controllers. Topics to be covered are: review as well as introduction of some new topics in matrix algebra, representation of finite dimensional linear systems in state space formulation and their solution. Important concepts such as controllability, observability, and stability of dynamical systems will be discussed. State and output feedback controllers, pole assignment, tracking system design, as well as observer based controllers are the design topics that will be addressed in this course. Text William L.
