Nguyen 1 Lily Nguyen Ben Chapin Warren 10B 022 30 April 2009 Assignment 2B In a world today in which research and development is growing, there is a lot of debate in the issue of what should be considered public or private domain and how far in which intellectual property rights should extend. Some would like to argue that intellectual property rights are essential to protect the rights and growth of businesses, whereas others would argue the complete opposite. Others would argue that intellectual property laws are way too restricting and limiting, which actually deprives others in unnecessary or unproductive ways. In an article called “Economic Effects of Intellectual Property – Intensive Manufacturing in the United States” by Robert J. Shapiro and Nam D. Pham, the topic of how intangible assets, such as ideas, have come to have a much stronger impact on our economy today than tangible physical assets.
