4. Show the impact of African traditions on Islam. Briefly narrate the introduction and spread of Islam in Africa. The spread of Islam in Africa began in the 7 th and 8 th centuries with the Umayyads. They were able to bring the religion to Middle East and then North Africa. The Berbers spread Islam along the coast of Africa and joined the Muslim community. On the east coast of Africa, Arabs founded permanent colonies on the offshore islands in the 9 th and 10 th centuries. From there Arab trade routes into the interior of Africa helped initiate the movement towards Islam and led to the development of Swahili culture and language 1 . Islam has already spread into northern Africa by the mid-seventh century. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries Islam spread from North Africa across the Sahara into the western and eastern Sudan. During the beginning stages, very few people completely converted to Islam. 2 During these beginning stages, the first to adopt the new religion in the western and central Sudan were the ruling classes. To these people Islam created advantages religiously and socially. The spread of Islam throughout the African continent was neither simultaneous nor uniform, but followed a gradual and adaptive path. However, the only written documents at our disposal for the period under consideration derive from Arab sources. 3 In the eastern Sudan, Islam spread more rapidly to the clan-based confederacies and to the pastoralist people since Islam provided them with a new source of religious and political unity.
