Lab #6 Global Climate Change and Biomimetic Research After a brief introduction by your TA at the beginning of lab, you will all participate in a Round-Table Discussion focusing on ways to reduce ‘mankind’s’ contribution to Global Climate Change. Your grade will be based on how well you have prepared BEFORE attending lab and on your participation during lab. The objectives of this lab are to : 1. Investigate the controversial questions surrounding global climate change - a. If mankind is accelerating climate change, what can we do to help alleviate the climate crisis and how might biomimetic research help? b. What are the sources of greenhouse gases? c. Complete a 10-point assignment where you will be graded on the quality of your brief (5 min) presentation about the biomimetic you researched and your participation in the open discussion that follows. 2. Calculate your personnel ‘Carbon Footprint’ and bring results to lab. You will report your calculated total and compare your total with that of your classmates (see pg. 4 of this lab). a. Discuss what you could do to reduce your personnel contribution to global carbon dioxide emissions. INTRODUCTION: Global warming has become one of the most controversial issues of your generation, even though scientists have been talking about it since the late 1950’s. Why has it taken society as a whole so long to acknowledge the topic of a rapid onset of global climate change? Is there indeed evidence that mankind may be accelerating the onset of global climate change? If so, what does this mean for the future of our biosphere? More importantly, what can be done to prevent or lessen the dire predictions about the effects of global climate change? While visiting several small islands off Alaska during 2002, Harvard professor, James J. McCarthy, asked the elders of native communities if the climate had changed in their lifetimes. Village after village, the response was the same: “well my grandfather said the ice used to come in November, and now it doesn’t come until January”. And “My grandfather said it used to leave in June. Now it goes out in March” (Shaw 2002). McCarthy is a biological oceanographer, and one of a growing body of scientists studying climate change that share the firm conviction that our world is rapidly warming up. Understanding the rate of change, direction of that change, its causes, and the consequences for humans and nature is the focus of this lab. As the numbers of scientists refuting the existence of global warming continually declines, controversy continues to rage about the causes, and consequences of global climate change. Debate rages on among and between climatologists, biologists, politicians and economists – making ‘Global Warming’ one of the biggest issues of your generation!
