A numerical value, such as standard deviation or mean, that characterizes the sample or population from which it was derived. 3. One viewed as a nameless item of statistical information: got laid off and became another statistic in the slumping economy. What is Statistics? sta u tis u tics (st ə -t ĭ s't ĭ ks) n. 1. (used with a sing. verb) The mathematics of the collection, organization, and interpretation of numerical data, especially the analysis of population characteristics by inference from sampling. 2. (used with a pl. verb) Numerical data.
