BIS 2B : Ecology and Evolution Mark Schwartz What is Ecology? Ecology is the study of the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment. Its fundamental goal is to determine the biological and physical factors that determine the distribution and abundance of species. Distinguishing between Ecology and its applications - Environmental Science and Conservation Biology use the principles of Ecology to help solve environmental problems - Environmentalism is a concern for the conservation and improvement of the natural environment, both for its own sake as well as its importance to civilization. (Wikipedia) - Ecology is about understanding a species distribution and abundance What is Evolution? Evolution is simply a change in the properties of populations of organisms that transcend the lifetime of a single individual. (24 pt) A population evolves when individuals with different genetic makeup survive or reproduce at different rates. http://www.biology.iupui.edu/biocourses/N100/images/16melanism.gif

Most of you are either majors or contemplating it. I operate with a basic assumption that you like biology and are struck with awe and wonder at the biological diversity around us. – This is not chemistry, physics or microbiology. There will be very little memorization of lists. You are not going to memorize amino acids, ethers, ketones or the Krebs cycle. The focus in ecology and evolution is on principles. – Learning principles, as opposed to memorization, requires a different approach to learning.
