CHEMISTRY 2B 2 TOUPADAKIS Lecture 9 Chapter 13 Slide 2 of 46 Interionic Interactions: Debye and Hückel – Ions in solution do not behave independently from each other. – Each ion is surrounded by other ions of opposite charge. – Ion mobility is reduced by the drag of the ionic atmosphere. Stoichiometric concentration is based on the amount of solute dissolved. “Effective" concentration or activity takes into account interionic attractions. An ion pair is made up of one or more cations and one or more anions held together by electrostatic forces.
