Course Description This course is designed to provide you with a broad yet in-depth overview of the policies, practices, and procedures for effectively managing the one of the most expensive and important assets in all hospitality organizations – people. Throughout the semester, we will consider a number of factors that influence the effectiveness of people and the systems in which they work, and provide opportunities for you to apply course topics to substantive situations that are similar to those you will face as a future hospitality professional. Finally, we will integrate information and knowledge you acquired in previous courses to the topics covered in this course. During this semester, you will... become familiar with the major environmental factors that affect HRM, including legislation, economics, and demographics; gain a comprehensive understanding of how to attract, select, develop and retain quality employees; and… understand the changing nature of the hospitality industry, and ways in which HRM can help firms achieve their business objectives.
