Classification of metabolic pathways Primary: pathways that are common in all organisms Secondary: pathways specialized in individual host BIOLOGY RARELY MAKES MISTAKES How do you mix and match chemistry Diverse microbial communities colonize the rumen Rumen is an anaerobic fermentor that turns biomass into CO2 and CH4 (ie  gas from cows) (trap it as a liquid and turn it into methanol) Natrual gas storage
