Chemistry 102 – Group Activity Basic Concepts about Matter 1 Chemists are interested in the composition of matter and the changes that matter can undergo. The study of chemistry requires the ability to describe phenomena simultaneously at the macroscopic, atomic, and symbolic levels. A clear understanding of the behavior of pure substances and mixtures is a big part of this. This activity will introduce you to these skills, which we will revisit throughout the semester. Goals: Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to: Compare and contrast the composition and properties of elements, compounds, pure substances, and mixtures. Classify a sample of matter using the terms element, compound, pure substance or mixture. Describe whether elements, mixtures, and compounds can be separated into simpler substances and the type of process (chemical or physical) required performing the separation. Use both particle diagrams and chemical symbols to represent elements, mixtures, and compounds. Distinguish between chemical and physical changes. Describe the essential difference between chemical changes and physical changes. Identify a given change as physical or chemical Illustrate a chemical change with a chemical equation and a particle diagram when given information about the formulas of the products and the reactants. Illustrate a change for state with a particle diagram and a chemical equation. Before Class: Read the sections of your text covering the concepts of mixtures, pure substance, elements, compounds, physical, and chemical changes. Then, answer the focus questions.
