Key to a successful movie is o The director (examples Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), Jon Favreau (Iron Man) o Simple decisions have a large impact Uniqueness of the Business Movies are a collaborative medium o Commercial Art form o Need Financiers Every picture making situation is different o Very expensive prototype o Intuition and instinct is important Requires a mix of creative and business (can’t separate) In this business you make a full investment before you even know if the film is marketable o Examples: Signing a player in sports, high fashion, R&D for drugs, Wild Cat Oil Drilling Not Unique side of Business Everything is negotiated Bargaining Power
