A New Estimate for Zippo Fuel Consumption Abstract Fuel consumption by small lighters is a subject of national interest and concern. A novel instrument for the measurement of fuel efficiency in the Zippo device, the Zippo Illuminance Transducer (ZIT) is described and used to make new estimates of the sensitivity, S = 0.75 +/- 0.15. The new result agrees with existing values, but suggests also that more accurate estimates are possible. The potential economic impact is shown to be significant. Short. Try to give both the main results, and their significance. Write this last. Introduction The significance of the Zippo in the national economy The Zippo is a well known instrument for tobacco ignition. It has been estimated (Snodgrass, 1996) that there are at least 12 x 10 6 Zippo lighters currently distributed in the US, of which approximately half are in active use. Despite its popularity, estimates of the efficiency vary widely (Headcase, 1997). A new method of measuring Zippo fuel conversion efficiency is presented in this paper, and the resulting estimates are compared with existing values.
