BUEC 280: FIRST DAY HANDOUT Course Title: Introduction to Labour Economics Location: RCB 8100 Professor: Simon Woodcock Tuesday, Thursday 12:30-13:20pm WMC 2676 Office Hour: Tuesday 10:30-11:30 291-4524 or [email protected] or by appointment What to expect in this course: This course will introduce you to the way economists think about the labour market. Unlike many other markets, the labour market is one in which most of you will participate at some point in your lives (if you don’t already). Besides that, the labour market is pretty interesting. We’ll see that economists use theory to guide their thinking. We’ll talk quite a lot about labour market policies, and evaluate them in the context of economic theory. The main goal of the course is to sharpen your economic thinking and develop a critical sense of how to evaluate labour market policy. There are two textbooks for the course: Drost & Hird: An Introduction to the Canadian Labour Market (abbreviation: DH), and Ehrenberg, Smith and Chaykowski: Modern Labour Economics: Theory and Public Policy, Canadian Edition (abbreviation: ESC).
