Religious Studies 145 Lecture 3_4/7/09 Comparative Analysis as a critical method : the 4 modes of comparison—none are satisfactory but we cannot do without comparison because it is inextricable from human thought and progress—we are always engaging in the comparative process. What do we learn about traditions by juxtaposing them? Jewish and Hindu traditions represent a certain kind of “species” of religious tradition Past studies have been a “cut and paste” method—taking examples from many different traditions and then trying to grasp the central underscored meaning—the universal structure underlying a specific tradition or symbol—this has been challenge because they are grabbing from anywhere and dislodging those examples from their original framework (ex: Eliade’s study of snake symbolism) WHY DO WE WANT TO STUDY COMPARATIVE RELIGION?
