RS 145 Lecture 7_ 4/21/09 Veda Rituals: Role of the Veda in cosmic order Vedic period 1500-200BCE Karma-Kanda Ritual Participants o Sacrificial patron ( yajamana ) and his wife o 4 categories of priests ( Brahmins ) Hotr priest—recites the verses Udgatr priest—chants the chants Elements of the Sacrifice o Dravya : ritual oblation offered into the fire o Devata : deity to whom the offerings are made o Tyaga : formula renouncing the fruits of the sacrifice The 3 Categories of Fire in Veda The 2 Classes of sacrifices o Isti : rice or barley offering, four priests o Pasubandha : animal offering, five priests o Soma : sixteen priests—most common they crush the plant of a soma plant —filter it to get the purest juice—ex: Agnicayana Ritual 3 most common Deities—there are no temples
