EE2801: Foundations of Embedded Systems Lecture 2 Data Types Memory stores data >> Binary data “bits are bits” – there is nothing but the bits stored in memory We need some rules for interpreting numbers How do we store a floating point number, an integer, a character or even a program instruction? If we see some binary bits, how do we interpret those bits? An arbitrary collection of bits has no meaning unless you give it one. For any given number, n -bits, there are 2 n unique combinations of bits that can be formed. In a computer, data are typically stored in multiples of 8-bit (byte). Given an 8 -bit byte, we can define it in several ways.
