Ebola Virus Presentation – Treatment and Sanitary Precautions Slide 1 – Treatment There is no standard or specific treatment for Ebola hemorrhagic fever. Patients are given supportive therapy, which includes: balancing fluids and electrolytes maintaining blood pressure maintaining oxygen levels preventing shock preventing loss of platelets and clotting factors treating secondary bacterial infections Other treatments, including antiviral drugs, different immunoglobins and recombinant human interferon have been used, with varying outcomes and efficiencies. Slide 2 – Prevention The prevention of Ebola hemorrhagic fever is difficult, since the natural reservoir of the Ebola virus is not known. Once an individual has been diagnosed with Ebola hemorrhagic fever, there are strict measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Slide 3 Prevention Continued Since all body fluids from an infected person are vehicles of transmission, contact with them and the infected person must be minimized. The following safety precautions are to be followed: wear protective clothing (i.e. gloves, gowns, masks and goggles) clean and disinfect reusable medical supplies and equipment (i.e. syringes, gloves and needles) dispose of waste safely burn all disposable supplies in an incinerator and isolate a latrine for infectious fluid wastes use safe burial practices the body is still highly infectious...
