Descriptive Statistics
a.
The heights, measured in centimeters, of a random sample of BME 423 students are:
170, 175, 157, 165, 168, 161, 173, 180, 180
Calculate the following :
•
Sample mean
•
Sample median
•
Sample variance
•
Sample standard deviation
•
Range
•
25
th
, 50
th
, and 75
th
percentiles
•
Standard error of the mean
b.
The above sample was taken from a population of 58 students (the BME 423 class).
•
Estimate the mean and standard deviation for the heights of the whole
population.
•
How would you characterize the error in your estimate of the true population
mean?
•
How does this error change with sample size (e.g., what if we had been given
data for 37 students, or 3 students)?
•
Do you think your estimate of the population standard deviation would change
significantly if you had been given data for 30 students?
Why?
