Patents, Trade marks, Copyrights Patent : a contract between the government and an inventor. (In exchange for disclosure of the invention, the inventor has exclusivity (re making, using, selling) regarding the invention for a specific period of time. Utility patents (processes) – 20 years (USA) Design patents (covers appearance of articles for manufacture) – 14 years (USA) Trademarks : a word, symbol, design, slogan, sound or combination of such that identifies the source / sponsor of a good or service. Duration is indefinite Copyrights : protects original works of authorship (eg software, music, art). Protection from printing, copying or publishing original works. (Life of author plus 70 years) Licensing : An arrangement between two parties where one has proprietary rights over some information process, or technology protected by a patent, trademark or copyright.
