Outline the opposing viewpoints related to human stem cell research. Discuss your own personal views related to stem cell research, using factual evidence and/or research to defend your position. The biggest opposition to embryotic stem cell research today is from anti-abortion groups. Anti-abortion groups oppose research on embryotic stem cells and state that what is being done is unethical. The group’s position is that in order to derive stem cells from a human embryo, it is destroyed at the sixth or eight day of development, and believe a human life has been taken. According to Fremgen, “the controversy surrounding human stem cell research is not about the ability to end disease, …but rather the use of frozen embryos to conduct research” (p. 286).Stem cells are unique cells in that they have the ability to develop into many different types of cells. In my opinion, stem cells have tremendous promise to help us understand and treat a variety of diseases and other health-related conditions.
