I read with interest the story of the Tennessee Vanderbilt Medical Center nurse, RaDonda Vaught, who gave a fatal dose of a medication to a patient and was criminally charged by Tennessee officials with reckless abuse and homicide. Vaught meant to give a patient a sedative (Versed), but instead administered Vecuronium Bromide, a paralyzing agent. What makes this case so interesting is that the State of Tennessee license board initially felt that her mistake did not warrant professional discipline. Recently the Tennessee Board of Nursing reversed their position, most likely from pressure received surrounding the criminal charges, and charged her with unprofessional conduct and neglecting a patient that required care.Standards of care or standards of practice are guidelines of how a nurse should act as wellas what a nurse should do or not do in their professional capacity. Nurses provide protection andpromotion of health, prevention of illness and injury, facilitate healing, alleviate suffering
