Know the names of the various phase changes a. Fusion (melting) – Solid Liquid = endothermic b. Freezing – Liquid Solid = exothermic c. Vaporization – Liquid Gas = endothermic d. Condensation – Gas Liquid = exothermic e. Sublimation – Solid Gas = endothermic f. Deposition – Gas Solid= exothermic 3. For a given phase change, determine whether enthalpy increases or decreases 4. Know and correctly use the following terms: a. Heat of fusion ( H fus) – the enthalpy of change of one mole of solid melts completely, - H fus for freezing ∆ ⁰ ∆ ⁰ b. Heat of vaporization ( H vap)- the enthalpy of change of one mole of liquid is completely vaporized, usually greater ∆ ⁰ than H fus, - H vap for condensation ∆ ⁰ ∆ ⁰ c. Heat of sublimation ( H subl) - H subl = H fus + H vap, - H subl for deposition ∆ ⁰ ∆ ⁰ ∆ ⁰ ∆ ⁰ ∆ ⁰ d. Heat of vaporization is usually greater than the heat of fusion 5. Understand heating-cooling curves and be able to calculate the amount of heat absorbed or released in phase changes. a. q=mass x c x T b. qtotal=q1+q2 + Heat of vaporization / mol or Heat of fusion /mol 6. Define and be able to apply the concepts of a. Vapor pressure – the pressure exerted by a vapor in equilibrium with its liquid or solid state b. Boiling point – that temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid equals the external pressure c. Normal Boiling point – that temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid equals 1 atm 7. Understand what phase diagrams represent a. Be able to identify each region in the phase diagrams of H2O and CO2 i. Solid ii. Liquid iii. Gas iv. Supercritical fluid - any substance at a temperature and pressure above its critical point 1. Critical point – the end of the liquid gas line 8. Understand and be able to describe the different types of intermolecular forces, also called van der Waals forces: a. Ion-dipole forces – an attraction between an ion and a polar molecule ex: Na+ dissolved in H2O
